It marks one file with an “Original” badge and recommends you keep it, and whatever you remove goes to Trash, where files remain for 30 days before being automatically deleted.

The steps, as Google writes them

That last line is the important one, and it is a recommendation rather than a guard rail — the selection is yours to get wrong. Because the removal goes via Trash, a mistake has 30 days in which to be noticed, which is the real safety net here.

What “duplicate” should mean

A tool can decide two files are the same in several ways, and they are not equally trustworthy. Matching names prove nothing; two unrelated files can both be called IMG_0042.jpg. Matching sizes prove very little either. Comparing the actual contents — every byte, usually via a hash — is the only test worth insisting on before you let anything delete.

There is a second rule that no tool should need to be told: one copy of every file must always survive. A duplicate cleaner that can leave you with none of something is not a cleaner, it is a shredder with a filter.
