Why is my phone storage full?

Look before you start deleting. In Files by Google, tap Menu and then Clean: at the top you find the device's used and available storage space, and the SD card's too if the phone has one. The same screen then names the usual culprits as cards — downloaded files, duplicate files, large files and old screenshots.
Start with the measurement
Google's help for that screen describes it exactly: open Files by Google, "Tap Menu and then Clean", and "at the top, you find the devices used and available storage space". It adds: "If your phone has an SD card, you also find the SD card's storage space." Knowing which of the two is full changes what you should do next.
The usual culprits
- Downloaded files — the pile you never revisit. On its card, "tap Select files", then "At the bottom, tap Move x file(s) to Trash".
- Duplicate files — the same file saved three times. One is badged "Original" and Google recommends keeping it. How to work through them.
- Large files — its own card, with the same Select files step. A handful of videos usually outweighs everything else on this list.
- Old screenshots — free space "through the deletion of screenshots created or received more than 4 weeks ago". Where they live.
All four end at the same place rather than at an immediate deletion: what you remove is moved to Trash, where files remain for 30 days before being automatically deleted. So the cost of being wrong on this screen is low, provided you notice within the month.
Where Adinand Auto File Sorter fits
Honestly: mostly it does not, and it is worth saying so plainly. Sorting is a rearrangement — it moves files from one folder into Downloads › Sorted Files, and moving a file frees no space at all. An app that sorts your downloads will not make a full phone emptier, and this one does not claim to.
The one part that can recover space is the duplicate finder, and only by removing extra copies that are identical byte for byte, with one copy of every file always kept and the removed ones held in a trash you can restore from for 7 days. What sorting does buy you is the ability to see what you have — a folder of Videos you can look at is a much easier thing to make decisions about than a folder of four hundred unrelated downloads.
